CASE STUDY
Magdalen College School is known for its rich history and thoughtful blend of traditional and modern architecture. We were privileged to support the project across a variety of areas, including the canteen servery.
The school’s open-plan canteen reflects this approach beautifully, combining contemporary design with practical, welcoming spaces for students and staff. For this area, we provided a custom-designed track lighting system to deliver clean, modern, and flexible illumination.
The client was looking for a minimalist and versatile lighting solution that would support the refined, open layout of the canteen servery.
Following early discussions, the key priorities were identified as:
After careful consideration of the project requirements, the LINK 26 versatile 48V magnetic track lighting system was proposed as a suitable solution. Its slimline profile—26mm wide and 52mm high—helped minimise visual disruption while complementing the open, refined layout of the space.
A square raft-shaped configuration was developed to align with the existing ceiling baffles and was suspended neatly using discreet cables. To maintain the clean and hygienic aesthetic of the environment, the entire system was powder-coated in a matt white finish.
The magnetic track system was fitted with a carefully selected combination of linear and spotlight luminaire modules to meet the project requirements.
The linear modules, featuring an opal diffused optic, provide soft, uniform illumination across the space. Adjustable spotlights were thoughtfully positioned along the track to highlight key food stations and counters, helping with visual clarity without overpowering the design.
A 3000K warm white colour temperature was chosen across all modules to create a comfortable and welcoming dining environment, while a CRI90 rating gives high-quality, natural colour rendering—particularly important for food presentation.
Each module magnetically fixes into the track, giving the client the flexibility to reposition or adjust the luminaires easily without the need for tools. This adaptability is especially valuable should the layout of the servery evolve in the future. While the magnetic system allows for easy adjustment, integrated locking clips ensure that each module remains securely fixed in place within the busy dining environment.
All luminaires are DALI-compatible with dimming control across zones. The system is programmable via a mobile application, allowing facilities management to tailor light levels according to the time of day or occupancy levels.
It was a true pleasure to work with everyone involved. Close collaboration between the client, operations management, and the contractors was key for us in ensuring each element was carefully aligned with the project requirements.
The track system and modular luminaires supported a straightforward installation, helping to minimise disruption to the space. The finished lighting provides a clean, evenly lit environment, with spotlights gently highlighting key service points. The result is a modern and functional lighting system that complements the wider school setting and supports the daily needs of students and staff.
Most importantly for us, we were pleased to help deliver a lighting solution tailored to the client’s specific needs and expectations.
“The school and I have worked with Impact Lighting for a number of years now, this project being one of those occasions. They are always willing to give assistance and design expertise, giving us confidence in their product. They have repeatedly demonstrated that good design and innovative products can make a substantial improvement to a space and how its used”
